How to sign-up for an ESRI account:

  • Go to http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/features/public-account and follow the steps for signing up. Sign up for the “Free Public Account” and NOT for the “Free Trial”!! Please use your xxxx@agnesscott.edu e-mail address and record your user name.
  • Here’s a brief video that explains the sign-up process if you have any difficulties:

  • Now that you have access, join our group on ArcGIS:
    http://arcg.is/1KTIJCc
  • Let’s create a map:
    • Click on “Map” in the menu and a new basemap will open.
    • In the field “Find address or place” enter “Europe” and the map will pan to Europe. Zoom in closer until you can see central Europe.
    • Click on bookmark and enter “Central Europe”. This will help you to find that spot the next time you visit the map.
    • Click on “Save” and select “Save as”–give your map a title and enter tags, then save it.
  • Let’s create a layer. The layer is the container where you will actually mark the locations Goethe traveled as well as pictures and other information.
    • Click on “Add+” in the menu and then select “Add Map Notes.” In the dialog window give your layer a name that looks like this: “yourname itinerary” (It must have your name so that I can collect all the layers in a separate map!). You can leave the template field as is.
    • In the left side bar you see a pane with different symbols. You can now start adding symbols and information. Play around with it, it’s straightforward!
    • Save your layer: When you’re done editing, unclick the edit button and then click on the notepad icon at the top of the sidebar.
    • Make sure the checkbox to the left of your layer is marked and then click the three dots under your layer name
    • In the new window, click on “save layer” at the very bottom.
  • Share the layer with the group:
    • Go to “My ArcGIS” and then click on “My Content”
    • Click on the layer name in blue
    • Click on “Edit” and scroll down. Check the box next to “Prevent this item from being accidentally deleted” and hit “Save”
    • Click on “Share” and check all boxes, then hit save.
    • I should now be able to see your layers and add all of them to the final map.
