We are off to our first reading segment. Please take a look at the syllabus calendar where you will see the page assignment. From Thursday August 27 to Monday September 1 I assigned 90 pages. Please make sure to spread out your reading over several days instead of waiting for the last evening! Download the text as pdf, you can either read it on your laptop screen or on a tablet. Adobe Acrobat reader or other pdf readers offer ways to underline, highlight, annotate the text–take advantage of these features, it makes finding interesting passages again a lot easier.

Each group has been assigned a specific topic in the locations spreadsheet. Each student will have to read all assigned pages for a specific day, but you can of course assign segments within a group. Let’s say your group is responsible for historical information this particular day. All three group members read all 90 pages, but you can split it up: One member takes notes on history from page 1-30, the other member from page 31-60, and so on. Nonetheless, all group members must be able to summarize their findings, so you must share information! Group assignments will rotate, so you won’t always be responsible for the same aspect of the text.

While you read the text, share your impressions about the text: What surprises you? Are there terms/phrases/passages you do not understand? What themes/topics do you think are appropriate for further research? Please share all of this information via twitter using the hashtag #asclead101carlsbad.
